Wisdom | Excellence | Joy
At St. Augustine, our athletics programs serve our school’s mission, which is to cultivate excellence, wisdom, and joy by assisting parents in the education of their children, so that they may grow into a thorough understanding of God’s truth, goodness, and beauty.
Our student athletes represent St. Augustine through training and competition in cross country, soccer, archery, and tennis. Our aim is to produce teams and athletes who excel in competition. But even more so we seek to grow in our student athletes an increased understanding of God’s provision and affection for his children. Our highest aim is that our student-athletes, coaches, and fans would continually reflect the truth, goodness, and beauty of our Creator and wholeheartedly point others toward Christ. St. Augustine was awarded the All Sport award by MAIS in the 2021-2022 school year.

The Gryphon cross country team is led by Coach Peter Davis and assisted by Coach Suzanne Koefoed. Together, they challenge St. Augustine students to train both mind and body to overcome the rigors of distance running. Their approach proved dominant in 2025, with the Gryphons sweeping the 1A MAIS State Championships—taking home the boys’ team title and individual state titles for both our top male runners.
Launched in the 2025-2026 school year, the Gryphon swim team certainly made waves! Led by Coach Christy Bounds, our roster spans from 1st through 12th grade, fostering a unique “K-12” team spirit. Coach Bounds emphasizes a balance of pursuing excellence and maintaining joy, ensuring that every practice is rooted in hard work and a desire to bring glory to the Lord.
The results of this dedication speak for themselves:
Elementary Team: Finished 4th in the state overall, featuring several individual State Champions!
Varsity Team (7th-12th): Secured 1st place in their division and ranked 8th in the state overall.
Congratulations to our athletes on a historic first season. Way to go, Gry-FINS!
The St. Augustine tennis team is led by Coaches Harrison Murray and Batu Saban. The students have access to both Varsity and Junior Varsity coaching and competition. The Coaches work hard to carry out the mission of St. Augustine School by cultivating excellence, wisdom, and joy on the court. The Gryphon tennis program won both Boys’ and Girls’ MAIS 3A State Championship in 2022, and brought home the Boys’ MAIS Championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

At St. Augustine School, Chess Club is more than mastering moves on a board; it is an extension of our mission to cultivate excellence, wisdom, and joy. Often called the “gymnastics of the mind,” chess offers students a centuries-old platform to develop strategic thinking, patience, and perseverance.
Open to both beginners and advanced players, our club provides a welcoming environment for students to grow at their own pace. We build skill and camaraderie through:
Monthly after-school gatherings.
Weekly online sessions.
Family Involvement: We encourage families to participate, bringing the joy of the game from the classroom into the home.
As proud members of the MAIS (Mississippi Association of Independent Schools), our Gryphons compete on the big stage:
Fall: Individual State Tournament
Spring: Team State Tournament
Whether analyzing a complex position or competing for a championship, our students are encouraged to pursue every match with humility, integrity, and Christ-like character.
